Kilted Loafer

Tassel Loafers

Tassel Loafers: The world has been in love with loafers for over half a century. The reasons are easy to see. Every man needs some mens dress shoes in his wardrobe. Loafers are the ideal accessory because they can be used to dress up a casual outfit or add an informal accent to everyday business wear. Loafers are available in a variety of different styles and there's something for every eventuality, from smart casual to the informal smart look.

Tassel loafers are one of the classics among mens dress shoes. Although for many they have a touch of the elegance we associate with the 1920s, they are a more modern phenomenon. A Massachusetts company claims to have invented tasseled loafers in 1952, at the request of an actor who had seen something similar in Europe.

Tassel loafers became especially popular in the 1950s, when they were a key part of the "preppy" look inspired by young men on Ivy League university campuses. The classic design of this and other styles in loafers mean that they are as popular today as they were then, back in the days when the "country club" casually elegant look was also huge among style-savvy men of the era.

Over time, this loafer became associated with lawyers in the U.S. In France also, they were an identity statement in the 1980s, amongst a particular social set. Of course, not everyone wants to look like a lawyer. Today, tasseled loafers have shed some of their older image, and have been described as "the everyman's shoe". As well as having devotees in the US and Europe, tasseled loafers are also popular mens dress shoes in Japan, where limited edition, designer ones are greatly sought after.

Among the different styles of slip-on shoe available, tasseled loafers are the perfect middle ground for many mens tastes. Like all loafers, they are comfortable and easy to wear. The tassel detail adds a touch of ornamentation, but for those who dislike footwear fussiness, it's not too much. The tassel is unobtrusive, and this type of loafer complements an outfit, rather than drawing attention to itself.

Tasseled loafers have undergone some style and design changes through the years. Originally they even came in two-tone varieties, but the modern taste is for a more sober and subtle look. Perhaps the most popular today are those of a reddish-brown, or oxblood, color, made in cordovan leather. If that's not the color you want, you will find it in many other colors and materials, including suede.

For a mens dress shoe that will take you from the boardroom to the cocktail bar and beyond, you can't go wrong with this classic loafer. Sophisticated and stylish without being ostentatious, having a pair in your wardrobe is always worth considering.
