How to Polish Shoes
Learning how to polish shoes and then doing so on a regular basis is an important aspect to good shoe care, not to mention looking sharp!.
Quality mens shoes can be expensive but if cared for properly, they can last half a lifetime.
We've researched the many videos available out there in cyber land and have included what we think is one of the better, more thorough videos of polishing mens shoes.

How to Polish Shoes: Ten Steps
- Cover
- Remove Laces
- Clean & Condition Shoes
- Apply Polish
- Wait
- Buff
- Reapply Polish: Toe & Heel
- Rebuff
- Shammy
- Lace & Insert Shoe Tree
Lay out an old towel or a newspaper that will cover the surface you are polishing your shoes on. This will prevent shoe polish from staining the table or floor.
Remove the laces from your shoes if they are not loafers
Prior to polishing, be sure you remove dust, dirt & debris from you shoes by using a damp cloth and wiping them down. You can also use leather conditioner as shown in the video
Apply matching polish to your shoes with a cotton cloth (old T-shirt) or a horse hair applicator brush. Apply evenly over the entire leather upper.
Allow at least 10 Min for the polish to absorb and dry. If you are polishing more than 1 pair of shoes just apply to all shoes and then in the same order move to the buffing step
Buff your polished shoes with a soft bristled horsehair brush. Brush briskly to a nice shine
Make a second polish application particularly to the heel & toe as these are the most visible and usually the areas in most need of attention
Buff again with the soft bristled horsehair brush, bring to a high shine.
With a cotton buffing shammy, briskly draw the fabric back and forth as shown in the video below. This step finalizes the process bring your shoes to a clean crisp shine
Re-lace your shoes if necessary and insert cedar shoe trees.
